Following a baseball game that nearly became a religious war, two Jewish boys become friends. Danny comes from the strict Hasidic sect that keeps him bound in centuries of orthodoxy. Reuven is brought up by a father patently aware of the twentieth century. Everything tries to destroy their friendship, but they use honesty with each other as a shield and it proves an impenetrable protection.

예전에 스피노자에 관한 책을 읽은 후 유태인들의 역사, 믿음과 사상이 더 궁금해지고 맘에 들기도 하여

이 책을 구입해놓고는 책장에 간직하고 있었는데 주말이 다가오는 목요일부터 읽기 시작하여 오늘 (토요일) 끝냈습니다.

 

주인공은 오랜만에 제 마음에 쏙 드는 nice 한 캐릭터 소유자로서 (요즘 읽은 책 치고 narrator 인 주인공이 맘에 쏙 들었던 적이 별로 없는데 ) 주인공 Reuven 은 머리 좋을 뿐 아니라 마음씨도 밝고 착하고 반듯하고 decent 하고요.

 

주인공이 열다섯 살부터 이야기가 시작됩니다.

책을 많이 읽고 공부를 열심히 하는 학문적인 배경도 맘에 들고 ( 무라카미 하루끼의 해변의 카프카에서도 주인공이 도서관에 가서 책 읽기를 좋아한다는 점 때문에 좋아했었는데 이 책을 읽으면서 무척 감탄스러웠던 것은 ( 그리고 부러웠던 면) 아들들을 확실하게 너무나도 잘 교육시키는 멋진 아버지들이 있어요.

 

 

다음은 주인공의 친구 (이 책은 우정에 관한 책이기도 합니다.) 그 친구 (= Daniel Saunder )의 아버지 ( Hasidic rabbi = Reb Saunder )가 service에서 하는 말을 quote 했습니다:

 

 

 All men come into the world in the same way. We are born in pain, for it is written, In pain shall ye bring forth children.
We are born naked and without strength.
Like dust are we born. Like dust can the child be blown about, like dust is his life, like dust is his strength.

And like dust do many remain all their lives, until they are put away in dust, in place of worms and maggots.

Will the Master of the Universe obey the will of a man whose life is dust?
What is the great and holy Rabban Gamaliel teaching us?
What does it mean to say the Master of Universe will do our will?
The will of men who remain dust? Impossible!
The will of what men, then?
We must say, the will of men who do not remain dust.
But how can we raise ourselves above dust?..."

그리고 다음은 몸이 많이 쇠약해진 주인공의 아버지 ( 대학교 교수)가

아버지의 건강을 걱정하는 아들 Reuven에게 남기는 말 중 일부입니다.

Human beings do not live forever, Reuven.
We live less than the time it takes to blink an eye, if we measure our lives against eternity.
So it may be asked what value is there to a human life.
There is so much pain in the world.
What does it mean to have suffer so much if our lives are nothing more than the blink of an eye?
I learned a long time ago, Reuven, that a blink of an eye in itself is nothing.
But the eye that blinks, that is something.
A span of life is nothing, but the man who lives that span, he is something.
He can fill that tiny span with meaning, so its quality is immeasurable though its quantity may be insignificant.
Do you understand what I am saying?
A man must fill his life with meaning, meaning is not automatically given to life.
It is hard work to fill one's life with meaning.
That I do not think you understand yet. A life filled with meaning is worthy of rest.
I want to be worthy of rest when I am no longer here...."

그리고 책의 마지막 챕터에서 왜 그리하였는지를 Reuven을 통하여 아들에게 설명하는데

아들의 brilliant mind 그러나 empty soul을 염려하여 soul을 키우기 위한 거였다는 대목입니다. 책을 덮고 나서도

계속 생각하게 되는 부분입니다. )
