mission : 한 해에 적어도 100권의 책을 읽을 수 있을까?

헌책방에서 1995 년에 출판된 것을 구입 ($1)
중3 때부터 미국서 학교를 다녔기에 Walden 과 H.D. Thoreau 의 이름은 익히 들었고
배웠었다. 영문학 수업이나 미국역사. 문예창작 , 철학수업에서나...
그래서인지 난 엉뚱하게도 내가 이 책을 틴에이저때 이미 읽었다며 잘못 기억하고 있었다.
(어쩌면 건성으로라도 읽었는지도?)
그러나 그 때 좋아하였던 책이나 작가들은 : 코스모스 (Cosmos) 를 쓴 칼 세이건 ( Carl Sagan) ,
The Fountainhead 과 Atlas Shrugged 의 작가 Ayn Rand,
Siddhartha 와 데미안 (Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair's Youth ) 을 쓴 Herman Hesse
구토 (Nausea) 를 쓴 Jean Paul Sartre 등등에 빠져 있었기에 ( 한 작가에 빠지면 그 작가가 쓴 책만 찾아보게 되는 버릇때문에)
Thoreau 를 등한시 했던 거 같다. 후회가 된다.
이 책은 틴에이저때 (열일곱 열여덟 열아홉정도?) 읽으면 인생에 도움이 될 것이 분명하다 생각되기에...
(철학이나 심리학은 중학교때부터 가르치는게 좋다는 견해를 _ personal opinion_ 갖고 있다.
그때부터 정신적으로 조숙한 아이들은 자신이 앞으로 살아내야 할 시간들에 대하여, 삶에 대하여 진지하게 묻기 때문이고
주변의 어른들의 언행을 지켜보며 삶에 대한 그들의 태도를 비판하기 시작하는 나이라 보기에,
철학적인 사고를 접해봄으로서 , 청소년 자살이나 범죄를 어느정도 방지할 수 있다고 본다. )
월든은
읽기가 약간 어렵긴 하지만 (영단어가 요즘 쓰여지는 단어 초이스가 아니기에 사전을 뒤적여야 하지만
요즘은 아이폰앱에 사전 _예를 들면, WordBook 이란 아이폰앱을 사용하고 있는데 편리하다. 가끔 영사전에 나오지 않는 단어들도 있지만
그런것은 구굴을 해보면 알 수 있다)
단어 초이스도 선듯 다가서기 어렵게 하지만
그의 문장스타일도 처음에는 적응하기 쉽지 않다.
마치 조근조근 조용하게 속삭이지만 길게 너무 길게 주절주절
이런 저런 방향을 알 수 없는 이야기를 늘어놓는거 처럼 느껴지는 문장스타일이기 때문이다.
헌데 그의 이야기를 잘 들어보면 귀여운 모습 감동적인 모습 현명한 모습 ...여러 모습을 보여준다.
마치 자연처럼. 웅장한 키 큰나무도 있지만 나비도 있고 지렁이도 있고 꽃도 , 미풍도 , 있듯이.
1855년부터 지인인 에머슨 소유의 땅에 있는 집에서 (월든이라 불리는 호수가 있는) 2년을 거하며 주변의 자연의 모습을 관찰하고 자신의 생각을
(철학을) 수필처럼 쓴 이 책은
소개하고 싶은 내용이 여러가지로 너무 많아 어디부터 이야기를 해야할지 모를 정도이라 ( 자세한 소개는 스킵하겠고)
가방에 넣고 다니다 하루에 몇줄씩만 읽어보라 권하고 싶은 책임. 한번만 읽어보기엔 아까운 책이라 생각하며
앞에서부터 차근차근 읽는거 보다 여기저기를 들쳐보며 몇 줄씩 다시 읽어보는 방법이 어울리는 책 임.
( = 두고 두고 야금 야금 읽는 맛이 나는 영양가있는 재밌는 책)

그의 외로움이 느껴지내요. 그 시대엔 더욱이 그랬겠죠? 대다수 사람들은 분주히 노동일을 하려고
오직 몇명만이 정신적인 일에 임하려고
또 그들 중 극소수만이 시적 (poetic) 이거나 divine life (영적인 신성한 삶)에 임하려
깨어났겠죠 ...

분주하고 번잡하게 너무 많은 일을 하며 시간을 허비하지 말고 그냥 심플하게 몇 가지 만 하며 세월을 보내라는.

자신에게 주어진 시간이 한정된것인지 잊어버리고 ,
남은 시간이 얼마 남지 않았는데도)
