라마야나는 인디아의 epic story 로

이 책을 완전 이해하려면 우선 라마야나에 대한 약간의 지식이 있다면 더욱 이해가 쉬울것입니다.

 (저는 Fine Art 전공이라 art history 시간에 특히 인도 미술사 시간에 접한 적이 있고

동양철학,인도 역사, World Literature 클라스에서도 접할수 있었기에 이해가 어렵지는 않았습니다.)

 

인도의 고전 그림들 중에 파란색으로 칠해진 피부를 가진 인물을 볼 수 있는데  그가 프린스 라마 (Rama) 랍니다.

그는 신 Vishnu 가  인간으로 환생한것으로 그 이야기는 라마야나를 읽어보신분들은 알것이고.

 인도인들은 피부색에 대하여 편견을 갖고 있는데 그 이유는 역사적으로 옛 고대 인도인들은 까만 피부를 갖었었는데,

외부에서 침략해 들어와 그들을 장악을 한 사람들은 밝은색피부를 갖고 있었답니다.

해서 light -skinned 을 한 사람들은 지배층이 되었죠.

 

 

( 인도에서는 피부색이 밝으면 귀족이고 짙은 피부색을  갖은 인도인과 결혼하지 않으려는 풍토가 있다고 하더군요. 뭐 그런것도 백그라운드 인포로 알고 있으면 라마야나에 나오는 이야기속 주인공들중

원숭이라고 표현되는 하누만( Hanuman)이 실은 dark-skin 을 갖은 원주민들을 이야기하였을것이라는

작가 Jonah Blank 의 생각을 이해하게 될것입니다.)

 

작가는 라마야나에 나오는 지명들을 쫒아  라마야나의 이야기가 펼쳐지는 배경장소를 직접 찾아가보죠.

한 예로,  라마야나에 나오는, 라마의 부인 Sita가 납치되어 감금되었던 섬이 지금 스리랑카였을거라고

짐작하며 스리랑카를 여행하는등. 지금의 인도 모습과 상황도 알려줍니다.

 

어째 횡설수설, 리뷰쓰기가 여간 어렵습니다. 내용이 많기 때문에.

그만큼 층층 겹겹 이 책속에서 들어있는 정치, 사회, 예술, 철학, 종교, content 이 많거든요.

 

직접 인도를 가본 분들이라면, 그리고 앞으로 인도를 여행해보고 싶은 분들이라면 읽기가 더욱 흥미로울거예요.

 ( 저는 구굴을 사용하여 인도 지도를 검색해보며 이 책을 읽었습니다. )

 그리고 개인적으론, 이 책을 읽고난 후 , 인도를 직접 여행해보고 싶단 생각은 없습니다.

: 어디가 왜 위험한 곳인지를--아직도 종교간 테러행위가 종종 일어난다는것을-알게 되었기때문입니다.

이 책, 추천합니다.

위 내용은 Gautama (석가모니) 깨달음을 추구하기 위해 떠돌며 진리를 구하려 sadhu (탁발승, 고행자 )가 되어 떠돌아다니다 마지막으로 boh 나무 아래서 득도를 하며 부처가 되는 순간의 깨달음을 묘사한 내용 중 일부입니다.

swami 는 힌두교의 수도승, 학자, 종교가.

한가한 주말, 방안에서 꼼짝 않고 에어컨 틀어놓고
커피, 차, 맥주를 마셔가며 mango도 먹어가며 책을 읽습니다. I'm having a great time!

그런데 어젠 유쾌하지 않은, 심각한 bloody & gory 한 내용을 읽었죠.

Sikh이라고 아시나요? Well, I didn't know about them until yesterday.

Arrow of The Blue Skinned God에서 작가는 라마야나의 Myth 이야기를 들려주다 그 이야기에 나오는 지방들을 여행하는 이야기도 들려줍니다.

현대와 mythic time 을 오고 가는 것이죠.

그런데, Punjab이라는 곳에 가서는 Sikh에 대한 역사를 들려주는데.

순교자라고 해야 하나? ( holy martyrs ) 첫 번째 Sikh의 창시자는 편안하게 살다 평범한 죽음을 맞이하지만 두 번째부터는 Hindu와 Muslim 들에게서 탄압을 받아 참혹하게 죽습니다. 그리하여 그들은 결국 투쟁을 택하게 되고 전사가 되어 테러리스트들이 되기도 하는데.

작가는 그런 (양쪽에서 저질러지는 만행) act of evil들이 사실은 고매한 lofty 한 뜻을 가진 pride를 갖고 있는
제법 훌륭한 사람들이 자신들이 품고 있는 꿈을 이루고자 cold conviction을 갖고 있을 때 행해질 수 있다며 Evil => Pride를
연관 짓네요.

How could Rama, the very personification of good, commit an act of evil?
How could Ravana, the Lord of Demon, behave like a true gentleman?
These are questions that Indians debate every day, at the dinner table, at the temple, at the tea hut near the village well.
Truck-driver philosophers and seamstress theologians come up with many explanations, but never with an answer. There is no answer.
Good and evil are not the separate entities we would like to believe."

라마야나에서 라마가 부인 Sita를 찾기 위한 방편으로 Monkey King Sugriva를 도와 Sugriva의 형인 Bali를 그것도 등 뒤에서 화살을 쏘아 죽입니다. 죽어가며 Bali는 "왜?"라고 묻고, Bali의 부인은 그런 라마의 행위를 Evil!이라고 말합니다.
