Past generation of swamis had got it all wrong, he realized.
Yes, a spiritual man must eliminate desire, but the way to do that is not by whips and thorns and diets
of bark. Such scourging of the flesh is just as bad as wallowing in luxury.
Both approaches make material things far too important.
The physical world, Gautama realized, utterly insignificant, so petty, changing, and insubstantial that it can hardly be said to exist at all- a mere dream, perhaps, dreamt by God himself. one should not hate the transitory comforts of life,
for hate of any sort pollutes the soul; one must treat them instead with utter indifference.
The true course lies not in degrading the body but in uplifting the mind.

I'm having a great time!
Well, I didn't know about them until yesterday.
How could Rama, the very personification of good, commit an act of evil?
How could Ravana, the Lord of Demon, behave like a true gentleman?
These are questions that Indians debate every day, at the dinner table, at the temple, at the tea hut near the village well.
Truck-driver philosophers and seamstress theologians come up with many explanations, but never with an answer. There is no answer.
Good and evil are not the separate entities we would like to believe."

I know of no place on earth where terrorism has been defeated, by any means whatsoever.
The nations that appear to come closest-such as China and the former Soviet Union- have merely exchanged the terrorism of individuals with that of the state.
And Americans, who have the highest rate of violent crime and incarceration of any country in the industrialized world,
are hardly in a position to lecture others on the law enforcement. It would be nice to believe that evil could be converted by kindness or crushed by force, but this just isn't so.
Perhaps all we can conclude is that evil can arise anywhere, in anybody, and that every human being is the ultimate custodian of his or her own soul."
