재미일본인들이 경영하는 헌책방에서 $1 주고  사놓은 D.H.Lawrence의 Women in Love.

내용이 약간 이상한 책.
시대가 감 잡히지 않은 책을 읽고 있습니다.

오늘 읽은 부분 중에서.

페이지 103,

In the spirit, I am as separate as one star is from another, as different in quality and quantity,
not because they are equal,  but because they are intrinsically other, that there is no terms of comparison.
The minute you begin to compare,one man is seen to be far better than another, all the inequality you imagine,
is there by nature.

She seemed to have passed into a kind of dream world, absolved from the condition of actuality.
She watched the sordid streets of the town go by beneath her, as if she were a spirit disconnected from the material universe.
What had it all to do with her?
She was palpitating and formless within the flux of the ghost life.
She could not consider anymore, what anybody would say of her or think about her.
People had passed out of her range, she was absolved.
She had fallen strange and dim, out of the sheath of the material life, like a berry falls from the only world it has ever known, down out of the sheath on to the real unknown."

page 144 absolved 라는 단어가 두 번 쓰여 있는 게 흥미로왔어요. 내용도 흥미롭지만.

처음 D.H.Lawrence 의 Women in Love를 읽기 시작했을 땐 조금은 이상한 책이라고 느꼈으나
중반쯤 해서는 아마도 그의 문체에 익숙해져서인지- 왜 그의 소설이 클래식인지, 그리고 영문 소설책 Best 100권 중에
하나로 이 소설이 list 되어 있는지를 알게 되었습니다.

 

" There is life which belongs to death, and there is life which isn't death.
One is tired of the life that belongs to death- our kind of life.
But whether it is finished, God knows.I want love that is like sleep, like being born again,
vulnerable as a baby that just comes into the world. "

여러 권의 책을 동시에 진행하는 버릇 때문에 D.H Lawrence의 Women in Love는 좀 더 천천히 읽고 있습니다.
이 책을 몇 페이지 읽다가 다른 책을 열어 그 책을 읽다- 끝마치기도 하고 다시 이 책을 몇 페이지 읽죠.

Women in Love 에는 -그래 맞아. 바로 이거야!-라고 생각하는 문장들이 아주 많아서 저를 즐겁게 하고 있습니다.
마치 맛있는 음식은 천천히 음미하며 입안에서 좀 더 chewing을 하며 시간을 끌어보고 싶듯이 이 책도 그런 느낌으로 천천히 읽고 있습니다.

He knew how near to breaking was the vessel that held his life.
He knew also how strong and durable it was.
And he did not care.
Better a thousand times take one's chance with death, than accept a life one did not want.
But best of all to persist and persist and persist for ever, till one were satisfied in life "

Women in Love-by D.H. Lawrence-를 읽어주는데 조금 무리가 있다--라고 생각 들게 하는 그 이유는-
'잔소리'를 싫어하거나 '말을 갖고 물고 늘어지며 짜증 나게 구는 것을 싫어하는 내 성격 탓.

사랑이 무언가를 갖고 여자 주인공 두 명과 남자 주인공 두 명이 내가 보기엔 쓸데없이, 아주 피곤하게!- debate을 하는데요.

또한 예를 들면 - 스타인벡 같은 경우- 옛날에 태어나신 옛분이시지만서도 그 시대에 맞지 않게 마음이 열려있고 인종차별에 대해 분노하는 것을독자가 느끼게 하는 바가 있으나 이 D.H. Lawrence의 경우, 다른 culture 나 (소설 내용 중 일본인들의 스모 레슬링에 대한 구절이 있었죠.) 타인종에 대하여 별로 열려 있지 않은 사람이구나! 하는 면을 느끼게 하는 바가 있었고.

그런 것들이 그의 단점이었습니다.

아무튼 그러한 이유와 바쁘다는 이유로 천천히 읽고 있습니다만.

가끔씩 무척이나 맘에 드는 구절들이 많이 있어요.

I don't want a definite place.- as soon as you get a room, and it is complete, you want to run from it.
- Now my rooms at the Mill are quite complete, I want them at the bottom of the sea.
It is a horrible tyranny of a fixed milieu, where each piece of furniture is a commandment- stone. "

She clung to his arm as they walked away from the market.
" But what are we going to do, " she said.
" We must live somehow. And I do want some beauty in my surroundings.
I want a sort of natural grandeur even, splendour."

" You will never get it in houses and furniture- or even clothes.
Houses and furniture and clothes, they are all terms of an old base world, a detestable society of man.
And if you have a Tudor house and old, beautiful furniture, it is only the past perpetuated on top of you, horrible.-
And if you have a perfect modern house done for you by Poiret, it is all possessions, possessions, bullying you
and turning you into a generalisation.- You have to be like Rodin, Michael Angelo, and leave a piece of raw
rock unfinished to your figure.
You must leave your surroundings sketchy, unfinished, so that you are never contained, never confined, never dominated from the outside. "  from page 356
