우선 Oxford English Dictionary 를 만든 lexicographers (사전편찬자) 에 관한 이야기이기에 이책은

 다른 책들에 비하여  재밌는 단어들과 뜻풀이등 word-lover 들에겐 친절한 책이라 봅니다.

 

이 책의 주인공 Dr. W.C. Minor 는 India (인도)의 남쪽에 있는 요즘은 스리랑카 ( Sri Lanka) 라 불리어지지만

그때는 Ceylon 이라 불리는 작은 섬에서 1834년에 American Missionary (선교사) 부모에게서 태어났습니다.  

 

His parents and Educational Background : ( 3살때 어머니를 여의었으며 그의 아버지 Eastman Minor  은

 미국으로 돌아오는 대신 계속 Malay 반도를 돌아다니다  2년 후 Singapore 에서 재혼하였습니다.)

 

Mission School 의 education 을 받은 William 은 (=W.C.Minor) 열다섯살이 되었을 즘

Singhalese, Burmese, some Hindi, Tamil and some Chinese dialects 등 여러 언어를 구사할 수 있었으며

 

열네살이 되던 해, 그의 부모는 그를 미국 New Haven 주에서 crockery shop 을 하고 있는 uncle Alfred 에게

보내기로 합니다.  William 은 홀로 London  까지 항해를 하고 그곳에서 Boston 까지 Boston 에서

New Haven , 미국으로 돌아와 Yale University 에서 medicine 을 공부하게 됩니다.

 

그의 공부는 아무 어려움 없이 순조로히 이루어지어 1863년 그가 스물아홉이 되던 해

Yale Medical School 에서 degree를 받습니다.

 

그러나 졸업후 Union Army 에 a surgeon 으로 join 하게 되면서 그의 인생이 바뀌는 계기가 되는

 가혹한 충격적인 시간 (traumatic period) 을 맞게 됩니다. 당시 미국은 Civil War 가 진행 중이었기에…

 

Civil War 에 대한 묘사가 있는 찹터는 제가 개인적으로 생각하기에 참 잘 쓰여진 찹터라고 생각합니다.

전에는 그냥 어메리칸 역사 교과서에서 몇 줄에서 두어 찹터 정도로 다루어진것을 읽기는 했지만

이 책에서만큼 가슴으로 느껴지게 하는 대목은 없었다고 봅니다. 참으로 오래전 이야기인데도 마치

 요즘 벌어진 일처럼 아프게 느껴지게끔 잘 써주었네요.

 

Page 52, 

“ …There the full horror of this cruel and fearsomely bloody struggle came home to him, suddenly,

without warning. Here was an inescapable irony of the Civil War, not known in any conflict between

 men before or since: the fact that this was a war fought with new and highly effective weapons,

machines for the mowing down of men- and yet at a time when an era of poor and primitive medicine

was just coming to an end. It was fought with the mortar and the musket and the minie ball,

 but not yet quite with anesthesia or with sulphonamides an penicillin.

The common solider was thus in poor position that at any time before.

He could be monstrously ill treated by all the new weaponry, and yet only moderately well treated with all the old medicine. So in the field hospitals there was gangrene, amputation, filth, pain, and disease- ….생략…

Some 360,000 Federal troops died in the war, and so did 258,000 Confederates “

 

page 56, Battle of Wilderness : …” ammunition trains exploded; the dead were roasted in the conflagration;

the wounded, roused by its hot breath, dragged themselves along with their torn and mangled limbs,

 in the mad energy of despair, to escape the ravages of the flames; and every bush seemed hung

 with shreds of bloodstained clothing. It seemed as though Christian men had turned to fiends,

and hell itself had usurped the place of earth.”

 

그렇게하여 Yale 에서 doctor degree 를 받고 missionary 조상을 둔  W.C. Minor는 Civil War 를 치루며

 특히 악명높은 Battle of Wilderness 전쟁터에 있었으며 탈영하는 Irish men 들에게 hot iron 으로

 letter D를  brand하는 일도 하게 되는 등 험한 경험을 하게된 후 몇년 동안은 아주 잘 지내는듯이 보여졌으나

 

1868 년 monomania , delusional 이라는 의사의 진단을 받게 되었고  이듬해 Army 에서 retire 하게되며

1871 년 W.C.Minor 는 유럽으로 휴양을 가겠다며 영국행 배를 탑니다. 영국에서 그는 새벽에 출근하는

한 가정의 가장을 총살하게 되고 그일로 인하여 1919년까지 insane asylum 에서 지냅니다.

 

(요즘 그와같은 경우, post traumatic stress disorder 라는 병명을 붙일 수 있으나 그럴 경우 증상이

오래가지 않는데 W.C. Minor 의 경우, 평생 고칠 수 없었죠. 헌데 어쩌면 그가 병에서 평생 해방되지 못한

이유가 지금은 치료 방법이 있으나 그 땐 없었기에 결국 적절한 치료를 받지 못하였기 때문인지도 모르겠다는)

 

이 책에서는 Oxford English Dictionary 를 만드는데 공을 세운 인물들 중 미국인 W.C. Minor 와 1887년

tailor 와 linen draper 사이에 태어난 가난한 배경을 가졌으나 스스로 학문적 성공을 거둔 James Murray 에

관한 이야기를 가장 많이 다루고 있습니다.  그에 관한 문장은 이것이 가장 맘에 드는군요.:

 page 32, “ I am a nobody,”

 he would write toward the end of the century, when fame had begun to creep up on him.

“ Treat me as a solar myth, or an echo, or an irrational quantity, or ignore me altogether. “

 

 

그 외 많은 흥미로운 이야기를 이책은 다루고 있지만 제 리뷰는 여기서 그만 마치기로 하고요.
