소설은 인상깊었습니다. 읽기전에는 전혀 모르던것들을 많이 알게 해준. 책페이지를 넘기며  “허걱” 거리며 놀라움과 충격에서 벗어나지 못해

 입이 다물어지지 않았던 대목도 많았기 때문입니다.

전혀 몰랐으나 책을 읽고 나서 알게 된 거 여럿 중 둘 검색해보니...:

1. : 도메니카 공화국 (스페인어: República Dominicana, 문화어: 도미니까 공화국은중앙아메리카의 섬나라이다.

( 도미니카 공화국은 도미니카와는 다른 나라이다.) 아이티와 함께 대앤틸리스 제도의 일부인 히스파니올라 섬에 자리잡고 있으며, 섬의 동쪽 2/3를 차지한다. 인구와 면적으로 볼 때, 도미니카 공화국은 카리브 해 국가 중 쿠바에 이어 두 번째로 큰 나라이다. 수도는 산토도밍고이다.

역사 : 7세기 이래로 타이노 원주민이 거주했으나, 1492년 크리스토퍼 콜럼버스가 도착한 이후로 순수한 원주민의 숫자는 급격히 줄어들었다. 1795년 바젤 협약의 결과로 섬 전체는 프랑스에 지배를 받기 시작했으나, 1809년 다시 스페인에 넘어갔다. 1821년 독립을 선포했으나, 곧 아이티의 점령을 받았고, 1844년 2월 27일에 아이티로부터 독립하였다. 그러나 1859년부터 1863년까지 에스파냐의 지배를 다시 받았고, 그 후로도 라파엘 트루히요의 독재 등으로 정국 불안이 있었던 힘든 역사를 갖고 있다. 출처: 위키백과

 

2 : 라파엘 트루히요 (Rafael Trujillo) :

라파엘 트루히요Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, nicknamed "El Jefe" (translated as "The Chief" or "The Boss") (October 24, 1891 – May 30, 1961) ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961.^[1]

He officially served as president from 1930 to 1938 and again from 1942 to 1952, ruling for the rest of his tenure in office as an unelected military strongman. His tyranny, historically known as "La Era de Trujillo" ("The Trujillo Era"), is considered one of the bloodiest of the 20th century, as well as a time of a classic personality cult, when monuments to Trujillo were in abundance.

footnote 가 많은 소설이란 점과 인터넷으로 검색을 하여도 그 뜻을 정확히 잘 알 수 없는

스페니쉬 단어들도 많이 나오긴 허나  앞뒤 문맥으로 보아 대충 그 뜻들이 짐작이 가기에 이야기에 흥미를 계속

유지하는것은 어렵지 않았습니다. 각주 footnote 또한 재미를 더하여주었습니다.

 

이야기 전개와 스토리 텔링 스타일 :

 Chronological order 로 이야기가 전개되지 않음 : 1974-1987의  미국에서 이민자 가족인 오스카와 롤라, 그들의 어머니 벨리 (Beli)에 대한 이야기에서 시작하여 1955-1966년 어머니 Beli 의 도미니칸 공화국에서의 이야기가 이어진 다음, 1988-1992년 오스카의 Rutgers 시절로,  오스카의 할아버지인 Abelard 에 관한 1944-1946년 이야기, 다시 1992-1994 년 오스카의 이야기로 시간은 최근에서 과거로 과거에서 최근으로 건너뛰며 이야기는 전개됩니다. 언듯 산만하고 혼란 스러울 듯 헌 전개방식이지만 오히려 boring 하지 않아 좋은거 같다는 느낌이 드는것은 줄줄이 바톤을 이어받는 이야기들이 reader 의 호기심도 이어주기에 충분하기 때문인거 같습니다.

 

Narrators: 두명의 first person point of view ( 1. 오스카의 sister 인 Lola와 2. 그녀의 보이프렌드이면서 오스카의 룸메이트이기도 한 Yunior) 그리고 third person point of view 가 믹스되어 있습니다.

 

 

여러 중요한 theme 이 있으나 그 중 하나 제게 가장 강렬하게 다가왔던것은 부조리한 사회에 관한것으로

Dictator (독재자)를 방관하고  허용하면 얼마나 참혹한 나라가 되는지 얼마나 지옥같을지를 그려주고 있네요.

( 소설 속 도미니칸 공화국의 독재자에 관한 이야기,  정말 사실로 벌어졌던 일들을 이야기 하고 있는걸까요? )

 

독재정치가 존재하는 나라에서 벌어지는 한둘도 아닌 여러 atrocity ( 잔학행위) 가 그려져 있지만 그 중

하나만 여기 옮겨봅니다.

 

다음은, 오스카의 할아버지인 Abelard, 거의 평생을 성공하고 존경받고 부유하던 Doctor 가 하루아침에

(독재자의 눈밖에 난 후) 가족과 재산을 잃고 감옥에 갇혀 고문을 받는 처참한 마지막을 맞게 되는지를

 이야기해주는 찹터 중 page 251,

 

“ In 1960, at the height of the clandestine resistance movement against Trujillo, Abelard underwent a particularly gruesome procedure. He was manacled to a chair, placed out in the scorching sun, and then a wet rope was cinched about his forehead. It was called La Corona, a simple but horrible effective torture. At first the rope just grips your skull, but as the sun dries and tightens it, the pain becomes unbearable, would drive you mad. Among the prisoners of the Trujillato few tortures were more feared. Since it neither killed you nor left you alive. Abelard survived it but was never the same. Turned him into a vegetable. The proud flame of his intellect extinguished. For the rest of his short life he existed in an imbecile stupor, but there were prisoners who remembered moments when he seemed almost lucid, when he would stand in the fields and stare at his hands and weep, as if recalling that there was once a time when he had been more than this.”
