A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

Smaller than other children, Owen Meany is a giant of wisdom, courage, and of faith. Gifted with precognition, Owen also foresees his heroic destiny. Being the best friend of Johnny Wheelwrights, the narrator of the story, Owen is a charismatic leader among his classmates, his teachers, and neighbors.

 

 

헌책방 ( used book store )에서 유연히 발견한 책.  작가가 낯설 때는 상을 받았느니를 따지게 되더군요.

(저질 책을 읽게 되어 시간 낭비하는 것을 가장 싫어하는 성격인지라.)

(중반쯤 읽었을 때 작가에 대하여 궁금해져 검색해보니 역시 그는 여러 prestigious 한 상을 수상한 경력의 소설가였습니다.)  

 

문장은 긴 편에 속하며 detail description (세세한 묘사) 이 많은 편이라 소설의 중반부쯤? 

Owen과 Johnny (서술자)가 속해있는 교회에서 열리는 크리스마스 drama에 대한 이야기 부분에서는 약간 장황하고 필요 없이 길구나라는 생각이 잠깐 들 정도로 그는 스토리를 풀어나가는 데 수다쟁이 같다고나 할까.

 

It seems he enjoys writing about people. ( His storytelling technique is excellent.)  

 

재밌고 흥미롭게 잘 서술하고 있어요. humorous 코믹한 부분도 있습니다만 무엇보다 감동적인 부분이 인상 깊습니다.

어린아이들이 자라서 청년이 되고 중년이 되는 긴 시간을 cover 하고 있으며.

(그들 중 몇몇은 중년에 다다르지 못하지만요.) 미국인 사회에 대하여 알게 되기도 합니다.

 

미국 사회는 caste 시스템이 아닌 class 시스템인데. 겉으로는 잘 드러나지 않아 우리같은 이방인 (= 이민역사가 짧은 자들) 들로서는 파악하는데 시간이 걸리거나 힘든,  그런 class 사회에 관한 이야기도 이 소설을 통해 조금은 알 수 있고요.

 

한 예로, 이 소설의 서술자, Narrator John 은 전통 있고 오래된 가문에서 태어난 아이이지만- John의 best friend,  Owen Meany는 열심히 일하고 비즈니스를 소유하고 있는 계층이긴 하지만 John 이 속해져 있는 society 에는 속해질 수 없습니다.

 

그러나  Owen 본인이 똑똑하여 스칼라쉽을 받고  John 의 할머니와 어머니 등의 서포트를 받아 둘 다 함께 그들이 살고 있는 지역에서는 (New Hampshire )  꽤 유명한 사립학교를 다니게 되는데요. 

 

Friendship 그리고 faith, heroism, miracle, precognition, sacrifice, Vietnam War 중에 draft 당하지 않기 위해-or 전쟁터로 가야만 했던 - or  전쟁을 반대하며 데모를 했던-그 시대 젊은이들이 어떤 고충을 겪어야만 했었는지 등 political history 또한 알 수 있으며.

 

Owen Meany 처럼 용감하고 현명하며 아름다운 캐릭터를 책으로나마 만날 수 있어서 행복했습니다.

Owen Meany is one of the most unforgettable heroes that I have ever met - that is, in books, not in real life.

3. creche: A representation of the Nativity, usually with statues or figurines.

5. elocution: The art of public speaking in which gesture, vocal production, and delivery are emphasized.

6. curmudgeon: An ill-tempered person full of resentment and stubborn notions.

7. macadam: Pavement made of layers of compacted broken stone, now usually bound with tar or asphalt.

8. vaunted: To speak boastfully of; brag about.  from the noun (vaunt ) 1. A boastful remark. 2. Speech of extravagant self-praise.
